स तु दृष्ट्वा नदी तीरे नावम् इक्ष्वाकु नन्दनः ।
तितीर्षुः शीघ्रगाम् गन्गाम् इदम् लक्ष्मणम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-५२-७४॥
sa tu dṛṣṭvā nadī tīre nāvam ikṣvāku nandanaḥ । titīrṣuḥ śīghragām gangām idam lakṣmaṇam abravīt ॥ ॥2-52-74॥
Translation
Seeing the boat at the river bank and wishing to cross the swift-flowing Ganga, the delighter of the Ikshvakus spoke this to Lakshmana.
हिंदी अनुवाद
नदी के किनारे नाव को देखकर, और तीव्रगामिनी गंगा को पार करने की इच्छा से, इक्ष्वाकु नन्दन राम ने लक्ष्मण से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
The Ganga is described as 'śīghragām' (swift-flowing). This current represents the formidable barrier between Ayodhya and the wilderness of Dandakaranya. Rama is 'titīrṣuḥ' (desirous of crossing). He knows that crossing the Ganga marks the definitive start of the exile, as they will step out of the Kosala kingdom's boundaries. He addresses Lakshmana, as the younger brother acts as his executive arm in logistical matters and the protection of Sita.

गंगा को यहाँ 'शीघ्रगाम्' (तेज़ बहने वाली) कहा गया है। यह प्रवाह उस बाधा का प्रतीक है जो अयोध्या और दंडकारण्य के बीच है। राम 'तितीर्षुः' (पार करने के इच्छुक) हैं। वे जानते हैं कि गंगा पार करते ही उनका वनवास वास्तविक रूप में आरम्भ हो जाएगा, क्योंकि तब वे कोसल देश की सीमा से बाहर हो जाएँगे। राम लक्ष्मण को संबोधित करते हैं, क्योंकि यात्रा की व्यवस्था और सीता की सुरक्षा में लक्ष्मण उनके दाहिने हाथ हैं।
