स भ्रातुः शासनम् श्रुत्वा सर्वम् अप्रतिकूलयन् ।
आरोप्य मैथिलीम् पूर्वम् आरुरोह आत्मवाम्स् ततः ॥२-५२-७६॥
sa bhrātuḥ śāsanam śrutvā sarvam apratikūlayan । āropya maithilīm pūrvam āruroha ātmavāms tataḥ ॥ ॥2-52-76॥
Translation
Hearing his brother's command and acting in no way contrary to it, Lakshmana helped Maithili board first and then climbed up himself.

भाई की आज्ञा सुनकर, उसका तनिक भी विरोध न करते हुए (पूर्णतः पालन करते हुए), लक्ष्मण ने पहले मैथिली (सीता) को चढ़ाया और फिर स्वयं चढ़े।
English Commentary
Lakshmana's character is defined by 'apratikūlayan' (acting not strictly contrary, but in perfect harmony). While Rama said, "climb and help her," Lakshmana pragmatically prioritized Sita ('maithilīm pūrvam')—likely helping her securely on board from the shore before fully embarking himself. The term 'ātmavān' (self-possessed/prudent) indicates that Lakshmana knows how to execute an order with intelligence suited to the context. The erasure of 'self' in the service of his brother and sister-in-law is Lakshmana's hallmark.

लक्ष्मण का चरित्र 'अप्रतिकूलयन्' (प्रतिकूल आचरण न करने वाला) शब्द से परिभाषित होता है। यद्यपि राम ने कहा था कि "तुम चढ़ो और सीता को चढ़ाओ", लक्ष्मण ने व्यावहारिकता में सीता को प्राथमिकता दी ('मैथिलीम् पूर्वम्')—संभवतः पहले उन्हें सुरक्षित स्थान पर बिठाया और फिर स्वयं पूरी तरह चढ़े, या किनारे से सहारा देकर उन्हें पहले चढ़ाया। 'आत्मवान्' (संयमित/बुद्धिमान) शब्द बताता है कि लक्ष्मण परिस्थिति के अनुसार आज्ञा का सर्वोत्तम पालन करना जानते हैं। सेवा में 'स्व' का लोप ही लक्ष्मण की विशेषता है।
