अथ अब्रवीन् महा बाहुः सुमित्र आनन्द वर्धनम् ।
भव सम्रक्षणार्थाय सजने विजनेऽपि वा ॥२-५२-९४॥
atha abravīn mahā bāhuḥ sumitra ānanda vardhanam |
bhava samrakṣaṇārthāya sajane vijane'pi vā ॥2-52-94॥
Translation
Then, the mighty-armed Rama spoke to Lakshmana, the enhancer of Sumitra's joy: "Be intent on protection, whether in inhabited places or in uninhabited wilds."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब महाबाहु राम ने सुमित्रा का आनंद बढ़ाने वाले (लक्ष्मण) से कहा— "चाहे निर्जन स्थान हो या सजन (जहाँ लोग हों), तुम सीता की सुरक्षा के लिए सदैव तत्पर रहना।"
English Commentary
The transition to the wild necessitates a change in protocol. Rama, addressed as 'Maha-bahu' (Mighty-armed), assumes strategic command. By addressing Lakshmana as the 'enhancer of Sumitra's joy,' Rama subtly invokes the duty Lakshmana owes to his lineage and his mother's permission to serve. The command to be vigilant in both 'sajane' (populated) and 'vijane' (uninhabited) areas reveals Rama's pragmatic wisdom. He understands that threats in the exile can stem from wild beasts in desolate areas or from hostile tribes in populated ones. Security now takes precedence over comfort.

गंगा पार करते ही राम की भूमिका एक राजा से बदलकर एक संरक्षक और वनवासी की हो जाती है। 'महाबाहु' शब्द राम की रक्षा करने की क्षमता को इंगित करता है। वे लक्ष्मण को 'सुमित्रानन्दवर्धन' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो लक्ष्मण के कर्तव्यों और उनकी माता के संस्कारों की याद दिलाता है। राम का आदेश स्पष्ट है कि वन में खतरा कहीं भी हो सकता है—चाहे वह स्थान वीरान हो या मनुष्यों से युक्त। यह राम की दूरदर्शिता को दर्शाता है; वे जानते हैं कि वन में नियम और कानून नहीं चलते, केवल सतर्कता ही रक्षा कर सकती है।
