अवश्यम् रक्षणम् कार्यमदृष्टे विजने वने ।
अग्रतः गच्च सौमित्रे सीता त्वाम् अनुगच्चतु ॥२-५२-९५॥
avaśyam rakṣaṇam kāryamadṛṣṭe vijane vane |
agrataḥ gacca saumitre sītā tvām anugaccatu ॥2-52-95॥
Translation
"Protection must necessarily be ensured in this unseen, uninhabited forest. O Saumitri (Lakshmana), go in front; let Sita follow you."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे सौमित्रे! इस अनजान और निर्जन वन में (सीता की) रक्षा अवश्य करनी चाहिए। तुम आगे चलो और सीता तुम्हारे पीछे चलें।"
English Commentary
Rama establishes a tactical marching order suitable for potentially hostile terrain. Describing the forest as 'adṛṣṭe' (unseen/unknown), he acknowledges the lack of intelligence regarding the terrain ahead. Placing Lakshmana in the vanguard ('agrataḥ gaccha') signifies Rama's immense trust in his brother's reflexes and pathfinding skills. Sita is placed in the center, the safest position. This instruction highlights that their journey is no longer a leisurely walk but a survival march where discipline is paramount. It reflects the Kshatriya instinct to organize and protect even in destitution.

यहाँ राम एक विशिष्ट व्यूह रचना (formation) का निर्देश दे रहे हैं। वन "अदृष्ट" (अनदेखा) है, इसलिए आगे आने वाले खतरों का पूर्वज्ञान नहीं है। लक्ष्मण को अग्रिम पंक्ति में रखने का निर्णय यह सिद्ध करता है कि राम लक्ष्मण की क्षमताओं पर कितना विश्वास करते हैं। लक्ष्मण मार्ग निर्माता और प्रथम रक्षक हैं। यह व्यवस्था इसलिए भी है ताकि सीता मध्य में सुरक्षित रहें। यह श्लोक वनवास के अनुशासन को दर्शाता है—यह केवल भ्रमण नहीं, बल्कि एक सतर्क सैन्य अभियान जैसा है जहाँ पदक्रम (order of march) जीवन और मृत्यु का प्रश्न हो सकता है।
