पृष्ठतः अहम् गमिष्यामि त्वाम् च सीताम् च पालयन् ।
अद्य दुह्खम् तु वैदेही वन वासस्य वेत्स्यति ॥२-५२-९६॥
pṛṣṭhataḥ aham gamiṣyāmi tvām ca sītām ca pālayan |
adya duhkham tu vaidehī vana vāsasya vetsyati ॥2-52-96॥
Translation
"I shall walk behind, protecting both you and Sita. Today, indeed, Vaidehi will come to know the suffering of dwelling in the forest."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं तुम दोनों की—तुम्हारी और सीता की—रक्षा करता हुआ पीछे चलूँगा। आज वैदेही (सीता) वनवास के वास्तविक दुःख को अनुभव करेंगी।"
English Commentary
Rama assigns himself the role of the rear guard, ensuring no danger can approach them from behind unseen. This formation—Lakshmana leading, Sita protected in the center, and Rama anchoring the rear—is a classic defensive strategy. The second half of the verse reveals Rama's emotional burden. He realizes that the initial phase of leaving Ayodhya involved the pomp of farewells and chariots; only 'today' does the physical brutality of the exile begin. His concern is focused entirely on Sita ('Vaidehi'), acknowledging the stark contrast between her royal upbringing and the rugged reality she must now endure.
हिंदी टीका
राम स्वयं को 'पृष्ठ रक्षक' (rear guard) के रूप में नियुक्त करते हैं, जो किसी भी आक्रमण की स्थिति में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण और कठिन स्थान होता है। वे दोनों को अपनी दृष्टि में रखना चाहते हैं। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग अत्यंत मार्मिक है। राम को अपनी चिंता नहीं है, परन्तु सुकोमल सीता के लिए वे व्यथित हैं। 'अद्य' (आज) शब्द यह बताता है कि अब तक की यात्रा रथ या नौका से थी, जो अपेक्षाकृत सुगम थी। अब पैदल, कंटकाकीर्ण पथ पर चलकर ही सीता को वनवास की कठोर वास्तविकता का भान होगा। यह राम के हृदय में सीता के प्रति अपार करुणा को दर्शाता है।
