श्रुत्वा रामस्य वचनम् प्रतिस्थे लक्ष्मण्Oऽग्रतः ।
अनन्तरम् च सीताया राघवो रघनन्धनः ॥२-५२-९९॥
śrutvā rāmasya vacanam pratisthe lakṣmaṇo'grataḥ |
anantaram ca sītāyā rāghavo raghanandhanaḥ ॥2-52-99॥
Translation
Having heard Rama's words, Lakshmana set out in front; and behind Sita followed Raghava (Rama), the delight of the Raghus.

राम का वचन सुनकर लक्ष्मण आगे चले। उनके पीछे सीता और सीता के पीछे रघुनन्दन राघव (राम) चले।
English Commentary
This verse executes the command given in verses 94-96. The formation is locked in: Lakshmana leading, Sita protected in the core, and Rama guarding the rear. The swift compliance of Lakshmana illustrates the perfect brotherly bond and military-like discipline within the trio. The narrator uses the epithet 'Raghunandana' (Delight of the Raghus) for Rama, creating a poignant contrast between his glorious title and his current humble position walking behind his wife on a forest path. It encapsulates the dignity with which they accept their fallen circumstances.
