Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मा स्म मत् कारणात् देवी सुमित्रा दुह्खम् आवसेत् ।
अयोध्याम् इतएव त्वम् काले प्रविश लक्ष्मण ॥२-५३-१६॥
mā sma mat kāraṇāt devī sumitrā duhkham āvaset |
ayodhyām itaeva tvam kāle praviśa lakṣmaṇa ॥2-53-16॥
Translation
"Let not the divine Sumitra suffer sorrow on my account. Therefore, O Lakshmana, enter Ayodhya [return] from here itself in the morning."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मेरी वजह से देवी सुमित्रा को दुःख न भोगना पड़े। इसलिए हे लक्ष्मण! तुम यहीं से कल प्रातः (काले) अयोध्या लौट जाओ।"
English Commentary
In a moment of supreme selflessness, Rama attempts to send his only companion back. Guilt-ridden that Sumitra is suffering because of his destiny ('mat kāraṇāt'), Rama urges Lakshmana to return to Ayodhya at dawn ('kāle'). He prioritizes Sumitra's well-being over his own need for Lakshmana's support. This request is not a test but a genuine plea born out of compassion. Rama is willing to face the Dandaka forest alone to spare his brother and stepmother the pain of separation, showcasing his protective nature even while being the victim.
हिंदी टीका
राम का त्याग यहाँ अपने चरम पर है। उन्हें लक्ष्मण के साथ की आवश्यकता है, फिर भी वे लक्ष्मण को वापस जाने का आदेश दे रहे हैं। राम को अपराधबोध (guilt) हो रहा है कि उनके वनवास के कारण लक्ष्मण की माँ सुमित्रा को भी पुत्र-वियोग सहना पड़ रहा है। 'इतएव' (यहीं से) कहकर वे लक्ष्मण को वन के गहरे कष्टों में जाने से रोकना चाहते हैं। यह श्लोक भ्रातृ-प्रेम और कर्तव्य के बीच के संघर्ष को दिखाता है। राम नहीं चाहते कि उनकी छाया लक्ष्मण के पारिवारिक कर्तव्यों को ढक ले।
