अहम् एको गमिष्यामि सीतया सह दण्डकान् ।
अनाथाया हि नाथः त्वम् कौसल्याया भविष्यसि ॥२-५३-१७॥
aham eko gamiṣyāmi sītayā saha daṇḍakān |
anāthāyā hi nāthaḥ tvam kausalyāyā bhaviṣyasi ॥2-53-17॥
Translation
"I shall go alone with Sita to the Dandaka forest. You shall become the protector of the protector-less Kausalya."

"मैं सीता के साथ अकेला ही दंडक वन में जाऊँगा। तुम अनाथ (असहाय) कौसल्या के नाथ (रक्षक) बनो।"
English Commentary
Rama rationalizes the proposed separation by assigning Lakshmana a higher duty. By declaring he will go 'eko' (alone) with Sita, he asserts his capability to handle the forest. However, he paints Kausalya as 'anāthā' (orphaned/helpless), implicitly stating that Dasharatha is no longer capable of protecting her. He asks Lakshmana to fill that void and become her 'nātha' (protector). This reflects Rama's desperate need to ensure a safety net for his mother in a hostile palace environment, trusting only Lakshmana for this critical task.

राम यहाँ लक्ष्मण को एक नया 'धर्म' सौंप रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि लक्ष्मण क्षत्रिय हैं और रक्षा करना उनका स्वभाव है। यदि वे राम की रक्षा नहीं कर सकते, तो उन्हें कौसल्या की रक्षा करनी चाहिए। कौसल्या को 'अनाथा' कहना राम के हृदय की गहरी वेदना है—राजा जीवित हैं, फिर भी राम उन्हें मृततुल्य या असमर्थ मान रहे हैं। लक्ष्मण को 'नाथ' (स्वामी/रक्षक) बनने के लिए कहना यह दर्शाता है कि राम को भरत या दशरथ पर भरोसा नहीं रहा, केवल लक्ष्मण पर ही विश्वास है।
