Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अद्य इयम् प्रथमा रात्रिर् याता जन पदात् बहिः ।
या सुमन्त्रेण रहिता ताम् न उत्कण्ठितुम् अर्हसि ॥२-५३-२॥
adya iyam prathamā rātrir yātā jana padāt bahiḥ |
yā sumantreṇa rahitā tām na utkaṇṭhitum arhasi ॥2-53-2॥
Translation
"Today is the first night passed outside the inhabited country. Since this night is without Sumantra, you ought not to grieve over it."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"आज यह पहली रात्रि है जो हमने जनपद (मनुष्यों की बस्ती) से बाहर बिताई है। यह (रात्रि) सुमंत्र से रहित है, अतः तुम्हें इसके लिए उत्कण्ठित (दुःखी/व्याकुल) नहीं होना चाहिए।"
English Commentary
Rama addresses the psychological impact of isolation. Until this moment, Sumantra's presence provided a tether to their royal identity and logistical support. 'Janapada' refers to the settled lands of Kosala; stepping 'bahiḥ' (outside) signifies entering a lawless, wild domain. Rama anticipates Lakshmana's potential anxiety or sorrow caused by this sudden severance from all familial support. By advising him not to grieve, Rama assumes the role of the anchor, asserting that their emotional resilience must now replace physical comforts and attendants. It marks the true beginning of their self-reliance.
हिंदी टीका
राम यहाँ लक्ष्मण को सांत्वना दे रहे हैं, क्योंकि यह पहली बार है जब वे अपने किसी भी परिचित या सेवक के बिना हैं। 'जनपदात् बहिः' का अर्थ है सभ्यता की सुरक्षा सीमा से बाहर। सुमंत्र केवल सारथी नहीं थे, वे अयोध्या और राजसी अतीत की अंतिम कड़ी थे। उनके जाने से जो शून्यता (void) उत्पन्न हुई है, उसे राम भाँप लेते हैं। राम लक्ष्मण से 'न उत्कण्ठितुम् अर्हसि' कहकर यह निर्देश दे रहे हैं कि अब उन्हें अतीत की सुख-सुविधाओं का मोह त्यागकर वनवास की वास्तविकता को स्वीकार करना होगा। यह मानसिक दृढ़ता का पहला पाठ है।
