मा स्म सीमन्तिनी काचिज् जनयेत् पुत्रम् ईदृशम् ।
सौमित्रे यो अहम् अम्बाया दद्मि शोकम् अनन्तकम् ॥२-५३-२१॥
mā sma sīmantinī kācij janayet putram īdṛśam |
saumitre yo aham ambāyā dadmi śokam anantakam ॥2-53-21॥
Translation
"O Saumitri, may no woman give birth to a son such as me, who gives endless grief to my mother."

"हे सौमित्रे! कोई भी स्त्री (सीमन्तिनी) मुझ जैसे पुत्र को जन्म न दे, जो मैं अपनी माता (अम्बा) को अनंत शोक दे रहा हूँ।"
English Commentary
This is a devastating self-indictment. Rama, universally acclaimed as the ideal son, wishes that no mother should ever bear a son like him ('putram īdṛśam'). He perceives his adherence to Truth as the direct cause of his mother's 'śokam anantakam' (endless grief). It reveals the paradox of Dharma: to be a righteous son to his father, he has become a source of agony to his mother. Rama feels this contradiction acutely, leading him to wish his own archetype would not be repeated in history.

राम का नाम 'राम' है जिसका अर्थ है 'आनंद देने वाला', किन्तु यहाँ वे कहते हैं कि वे अपनी माँ के लिए 'अनंत शोक' का कारण बन गए हैं। यह विडंबना (irony) अत्यंत दुखद है। वे स्वयं को एक कुपुत्र (bad son) के रूप में देखते हैं। 'सीमन्तिनी' (विवाहित स्त्री/गर्भवती स्त्री) के लिए उनकी प्रार्थना है कि मेरा उदाहरण दुहराया न जाए। यह श्लोक वनवास के व्यक्तिगत मूल्य (personal cost) को उजागर करता है—मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम बनने की कीमत एक पुत्र की आत्म-ग्लानि है।
