Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मन्ये प्रीति विशिष्टा सा मत्तः लक्ष्मण सारिका ।
यस्याः तत् श्रूयते वाक्यम् शुक पादम् अरेर् दश ॥२-५३-२२॥
manye prīti viśiṣṭā sā mattaḥ lakṣmaṇa sārikā |
yasyāḥ tat śrūyate vākyam śuka pādam arer daśa ॥2-53-22॥
Translation
"I consider, O Lakshmana, that Sarika (Myna bird) to be superior to me in affection; whose sentence is heard: 'O Parrot, bite the foot of the enemy!'"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे लक्ष्मण! मैं मानता हूँ कि वह मैना (सारिका) मुझसे अधिक स्नेह करने वाली (श्रेष्ठ) थी, जिसका वह वाक्य सुना जाता है—'हे शुक (तोते)! शत्रु के पैर को काट ले (दश)।'"
English Commentary
Rama indulges in a melancholic comparison with a pet 'Sārikā' (Myna bird) from the palace. He recalls how the bird vocally defended its mate against an intruder, crying out "Bite the enemy's foot!" Rama feels this bird possessed more 'prīti' (love/loyalty) and courage than he does. While the bird fought for its kin, Rama feels he passively accepted the injustice done to his parents without fighting back against the 'enemy' (Kaikeyi). It highlights his frustration with his own passivity imposed by his vow of Truth.

राम एक बहुत ही व्यक्तिगत और संभवतः बचपन की स्मृति को याद करते हैं। राजमहल में पली हुई एक मैना (पक्षी) ने अपने साथी तोते की रक्षा के लिए आक्रमणकारी (शत्रु/बिल्ली आदि) को काटने के लिए कहा था। राम तुलना करते हैं कि वह पक्षी अपने प्रियजनों की रक्षा के लिए आक्रामक हो सकती थी, किन्तु राम 'मानव' और 'क्षत्रिय' होकर भी अपने माता-पिता के शत्रुओं (कैकेयी/मंथरा) का कुछ नहीं बिगाड़ पाए। 'पादम् अरेर् दश' (शत्रु का पैर काट ले) एक उग्र प्रतिक्रिया है जो राम अपनी मर्यादा के कारण नहीं कर सके। वे स्वयं को उस पक्षी से भी हीन अनुभव कर रहे हैं।
