अल्प भाग्या हि मे माता कौसल्या रहिता मया ।
शेते परम दुह्ख आर्ता पतिता शोक सागरे ॥२-५३-२४॥
alpa bhāgyā hi me mātā kausalyā rahitā mayā |
śete parama duhkha ārtā patitā śoka sāgare ॥2-53-24॥
Translation
"Deprived of me, my mother Kausalya, of little fortune, sleeps [on the floor] afflicted by supreme sorrow, having fallen into an ocean of grief."

"मुझसे रहित होकर मेरी मंदभागिनी (अल्प भाग्या) माता कौसल्या शोक के सागर में गिरकर, परम दुःख से पीड़ित होकर (भूमि पर) सो रही होंगी।"
English Commentary
Rama visualizes Kausalya's state back in Ayodhya. He uses the metaphor 'śoka sāgare' (ocean of grief) to describe her overwhelming sorrow. Describing her as 'rahitā mayā' (without me), he realizes he has taken away her primary reason for living. He imagines her sleeping in misery, likely abandoning her royal bed, mirroring his own state in the forest. The repetition of 'alpa bhāgyā' (unfortunate) underscores his belief that Kausalya has been consistently tragic—first neglected by the King for Kaikeyi, and now abandoned by her son for Dharma.

राम कल्पना कर रहे हैं कि राजमहल में इस समय क्या हो रहा होगा। कौसल्या, जो पटरानी हैं, आज 'शोक सागर' में डूबी हैं। राम जानते हैं कि उनके वियोग में कौसल्या ने राजसी सुख त्याग दिए होंगे और भूमि पर शयन कर रही होंगी ('शेते')। 'अल्प भाग्या' (कम नसीब वाली) विशेषण बार-बार आता है, जो दर्शाता है कि पटरानी होकर भी उन्हें जीवन में सुख नहीं मिला—पहले पति की उपेक्षा और अब पुत्र का वियोग। राम का हृदय अपनी माँ की इस दशा को सोचकर विदीर्ण हो रहा है।
