Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एको हि अहम् अयोध्याम् च पृथिवीम् च अपि लक्ष्मण ।
तरेयम् इषुभिः क्रुद्धो ननु वीर्यम् अकारणम् ॥२-५३-२५॥
eko hi aham ayodhyām ca pṛthivīm ca api lakṣmaṇa |
tareyam iṣubhiḥ kruddho nanu vīryam akāraṇam ॥2-53-25॥
Translation
"Indeed, O Lakshmana, if I were angry, I alone could conquer/overturn Ayodhya and even the earth with my arrows; but [without a righteous cause] my prowess is purposeless."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे लक्ष्मण! यदि मैं क्रुद्ध हो जाऊँ, तो अकेला ही अपने बाणों से अयोध्या और पूरी पृथ्वी को भी जीत (उलट-पलट) सकता हूँ; किन्तु (धर्म का बंधन न होने पर) मेरा यह पराक्रम अकारण (व्यर्थ/बिना आधार का) है।"
English Commentary
This verse defines the essence of Rama's character: Power controlled by Dharma. He clarifies that his passivity is not due to weakness. He asserts his martial superiority, claiming he could single-handedly ('eko hi') conquer Ayodhya and the world if he unleashed his anger ('kruddho'). However, he labels this potential violence as 'vīryam akāraṇam'—prowess without a valid cause. To use force to violate his father's truth would be adharmic. Thus, his restraint is a conscious, heroic choice to uphold Truth over Power, making his grief all the more poignant because it is self-inflicted for a higher ideal.

यह श्लोक राम के व्यक्तित्व की कुंजी है। वे दुर्बलता के कारण रो नहीं रहे हैं। वे घोषणा करते हैं कि उनमें इतना सामर्थ्य है कि वे अकेले ('एको हि') पूरी पृथ्वी को जीत सकते हैं। किन्तु वे ऐसा क्यों नहीं करते? क्योंकि यह 'अकारणम्' होगा। यहाँ 'अकारणम्' का अर्थ है—धर्मसम्मत कारण का अभाव। पिता के वचन को भंग करके बलपूर्वक राज्य लेना 'धर्म' नहीं है। शक्ति का होना पर्याप्त नहीं है, शक्ति के प्रयोग के लिए नैतिक आधार (Moral Ground) होना आवश्यक है। यह राम के संयम (Restraint) की पराकाष्ठा है।
