न एतत् औपयिकम् राम यद् इदं परितप्यसे ।
विषादयसि सीताम् च माम् चैव पुरुष ऋषभ ॥२-५३-३०॥
na etat aupayikam rāma yad idam paritapyase । viṣādayasi sītām ca mām caiva puruṣa ṛṣabha ॥ ॥2-53-30॥
Translation
O Best of Men, it is not appropriate for you to grieve like this; by doing so, you are making Sita and me sad as well.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुरुषर्षभ (पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ) राम! आपका इस प्रकार संताप करना उचित नहीं है, क्योंकि (इससे) आप सीता को और मुझे भी दुखी कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Lakshmana appeals to Rama's sense of responsibility rather than offering empty platitudes. He points out the phenomenon of emotional contagion within their small group. As the 'Best of Men' and the leader of this party, Rama sets the emotional tone. Lakshmana argues that Rama's grief is not an isolated event but a cause of distress for Sita and himself. Knowing Rama's nature—that he cares more for others than for himself—Lakshmana shrewdly uses this argument to snap Rama out of his despair. It is a call to leadership: Rama must be strong not just for himself, but because his dependents draw their strength entirely from him.

लक्ष्मण यहाँ व्यावहारिक मनोविज्ञान का परिचय देते हैं। वे राम को बताते हैं कि एक नेता या परिवार के मुखिया का मनोबल उसके आश्रितों को सीधे प्रभावित करता है। यदि राम—जो 'पुरुषर्षभ' हैं—टूट जायेंगे, तो सुकुमार सीता और सेवक लक्ष्मण का क्या होगा? लक्ष्मण राम को यह अहसास दिलाते हैं कि उनका दुख अब व्यक्तिगत नहीं रह गया है; यह सीता और लक्ष्मण के दुःख का कारण बन रहा है। यह राम को अपने शोक से बाहर निकालने का सबसे प्रभावी तरीका है, क्योंकि राम अपने लिए भले ही कष्ट सह लें, किन्तु वे दूसरों को (विशेषकर सीता और लक्ष्मण को) दुखी नहीं देख सकते। लक्ष्मण यहाँ कर्तव्य-बोध के माध्यम से राम को धैर्य धारण करने के लिए प्रेरित कर रहे हैं।
