Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न हि तातम् न शत्रुघ्नम् न सुमित्राम् परम् तप ।
द्रष्टुम् इच्चेयम् अद्य अहम् स्वर्गम् वा अपि त्वया विना ॥२-५३-३२॥
na hi tātam na śatrughnam na sumitrām param tapa । draṣṭum icceyam adya aham svargam vā api tvayā vinā ॥ ॥2-53-32॥
Translation
O Scorcher of Foes, without you, I do not wish to see father, Shatrughna, or Sumitra (my mother). I do not wish to see even heaven without you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे परंतप! आपके बिना मैं न पिता (दशरथ) को, न शत्रुघ्न को और न ही (अपनी माता) सुमित्रा को देखना चाहता हूँ। मैं (आपके बिना) स्वर्ग को भी नहीं देखना चाहता।
English Commentary
Lakshmana reaches the zenith of renunciatory love in this verse. He explicitly lists the dearest bonds of human life—father, brother, and mother—and rejects them all if they must be enjoyed without Rama. Furthermore, he rejects Svarga (heaven), the ultimate goal of righteousness. In the context of Bhakti (devotion), this is significant: the devotee prefers the company of the Lord, even in suffering (the forest), over the pleasures of heaven without Him. It illustrates that for Lakshmana, Rama is the totality of his universe. The epithet Parantapa (Scorcher of Foes) contrasts Rama's martial power with the tender, all-encompassing love he inspires in his brother.

यह लक्ष्मण के त्याग और प्रेम का चरम बिंदु है। वे केवल भौतिक सुखों का ही नहीं, बल्कि अपने सबसे आत्मीय रिश्तों (माता, भाई, पिता) और यहाँ तक कि पारलौकिक सुख ('स्वर्गम्') का भी तिरस्कार करते हैं, यदि वह राम के बिना हो। वैष्णव दर्शन में, भगवान के बिना मोक्ष या स्वर्ग भी तुच्छ माना जाता है। लक्ष्मण यहाँ उसी सिद्धांत का प्रतिपादन कर रहे हैं। 'परंतप' (शत्रुओं को तपाने वाले) संबोधन का प्रयोग करके वे राम के पराक्रम को याद दिलाते हैं, जबकि स्वयं प्रेम के वशीभूत होकर सर्वस्व त्याग की घोषणा करते हैं। यह श्लोक सिद्ध करता है कि लक्ष्मण के लिए 'राम' ही उनका धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष हैं।
