Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रात्रिम् कथम्चित् एव इमाम् सौमित्रे वर्तयामहे ।
उपावर्तामहे भूमाव् आस्तीर्य स्वयम् आर्जितैः ॥२-५३-४॥
rātrim kathamcit eva imām saumitre vartayāmahe |
upāvartāmahe bhūmāv āstīrya svayam ārjitaiḥ ॥2-53-4॥
Translation
"O Saumitri, spreading on the ground [a bed of leaves] gathered by ourselves, let us somehow spend this night."

"हे सौमित्रे! स्वयं इकट्ठे किए हुए (पत्तों/घास) को भूमि पर बिछाकर, हम जैसे-तैसे इस रात्रि को व्यतीत करेंगे।"
English Commentary
The word 'kathamcit' (somehow/with difficulty) reveals the struggle involved in adjusting to this primitive existence. There is no romanticizing of nature here; it is a hardship. The phrase 'svayam ārjitaiḥ' (gathered by oneself) highlights the loss of privilege. The hands that wielded the bow and were adorned with jewels are now gathering leaves for bedding. This act symbolizes the complete stripping away of royal status. Rama invites Lakshmana to settle on the bare earth, marking their transformation from princes to ascetics relying solely on their own labor.

'कथंचित्' (जैसे-तैसे/बड़ी कठिनाई से) शब्द राम की मानसिक और शारीरिक स्थिति को दर्शाता है। यह स्थिति उनके लिए नई और कष्टप्रद है। 'स्वयम् आर्जितैः' (स्वयं अर्जित/इकट्ठे किए गए) वाक्यांश अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। जो राजकुमार अब तक दासों द्वारा बिछाई गई कोमल शय्या पर सोते थे, आज वे स्वयं जंगल से पत्तियां और घास चुनकर अपना बिस्तर बना रहे हैं। यह 'अहंकार' के नाश और परिस्थिति के साथ 'समझौते' का प्रतीक है। राम यहाँ किसी चमत्कार की अपेक्षा नहीं करते, बल्कि कठोर यथार्थ को अपनाते हैं।
