ध्रुवम् अद्य महा राजो दुह्खम् स्वपिति लक्ष्मण ।
कृत कामा तु कैकेयी तुष्टा भवितुम् अर्हति ॥२-५३-६॥
dhruvam adya mahā rājo duhkham svapiti lakṣmaṇa |
kṛta kāmā tu kaikeyī tuṣṭā bhavitum arhati ॥2-53-6॥
Translation
"Assuredly, O Lakshmana, the Great King sleeps in sorrow today; but Kaikeyi, having accomplished her desire, must be satisfied."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे लक्ष्मण! निश्चित ही आज महाराज (दशरथ) दुःख में सो रहे होंगे (या सो नहीं पा रहे होंगे)। किन्तु, अपनी कामना पूर्ण कर लेने वाली कैकेयी अवश्य संतुष्ट होगी।"
English Commentary
In the solitude of the night, Rama's thoughts drift to the parents he left behind. He contrasts the two figures: the grieving father and the triumphant stepmother. The phrase 'kṛta kāmā' (one who has achieved her desire) for Kaikeyi carries a tone of bitter realization. Rama envisions Dasharatha in agony ('duhkham'), while he imagines Kaikeyi basking in the success of her plot. This verse reveals Rama's torment; he is not indifferent to the chaos caused by his exile. He acutely feels the injustice served to his father and the cold ambition of Kaikeyi.

रात्रि के एकांत में राम का मन अयोध्या की ओर जाता है। यहाँ राम के मन में कैकेयी के प्रति हल्का सा रोष या विडंबना (irony) झलकती है। वे पिता के लिए 'दुःख' और कैकेयी के लिए 'तुष्टि' (संतोष) की कल्पना करते हैं। 'कृत कामा' (जिसका काम पूरा हो गया) विशेषण में एक तीखापन है। राम जानते हैं कि उनकी अनुपस्थिति दशरथ के लिए प्राणघातक पीड़ा है, जबकि कैकेयी इसे अपनी विजय मान रही होगी। यह श्लोक राम के मानवीय पक्ष को दिखाता है—वे ईश्वर होते हुए भी पुत्रवत मोह और सौतेली माँ के व्यवहार से आहत हैं।
