सा हि देवी महा राजम् कैकेयी राज्य कारणात् ।
अपि न च्यावयेत् प्राणान् दृष्ट्वा भरतम् आगतम् ॥२-५३-७॥
sā hi devī mahā rājam kaikeyī rājya kāraṇāt |
api na cyāvayet prāṇān dṛṣṭvā bharatam āgatam ॥2-53-7॥
Translation
"Seeing Bharata arrive, that lady Kaikeyi, for the sake of the kingdom, might even deprive the Great King of his life."

"भरत के आने पर, वह देवी कैकेयी राज्य के लोभ के कारण कहीं महाराज के प्राण ही न ले ले।"
English Commentary
This verse captures a rare moment of raw suspicion and fear in Rama, bordering on paranoia induced by grief. He fears that Kaikeyi's ambition knows no bounds, to the extent that she might eliminate King Dasharatha to secure the throne for Bharata ('rājya kāraṇāt' - for the sake of the kingdom). Addressing her as 'Devi' here seems ironic or merely customary, contrasting sharply with the heinous act he fears she might commit. It reveals the depth of Rama's distrust towards Kaikeyi at this vulnerable juncture and his intense anxiety for his father's safety.

यह राम के चरित्र का एक अत्यंत दुर्लभ और चौंकाने वाला क्षण है। सदैव संयमित रहने वाले राम यहाँ घोर आशंका व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। उन्हें भय है कि सत्ता की भूख में कैकेयी 'विधवा' होने का कलंक भी ले सकती है। 'च्यावयेत् प्राणान्' (प्राणों से अलग करना/मारना) एक बहुत गंभीर आरोप है। यह दर्शाता है कि राम उस समय कितने मानसिक तनाव और विषाद में थे। वे कैकेयी की महत्वाकांक्षा को इतना उग्र मान रहे हैं कि उन्हें अपने पिता के जीवन का भय सता रहा है। यह वनवास की पहली रात्रि का गहरा अवसाद है।
