हुत अग्नि होत्रम् दृष्ट्वा एव महा भागम् कृत अन्जलिः ।
रामः सौमित्रिणा सार्धम् सीतया च अभ्यवादयत् ॥२-५४-१२॥
huta agni hotram dṛṣṭvā eva mahā bhāgam kṛta anjaliḥ । rāmaḥ saumitriṇā sārdham sītayā ca abhyavādayat ॥ ॥2-54-12॥
Translation
Seeing that great-souled sage who had just finished his Agnihotra (fire oblation), Rama, along with Lakshmana and Sita, joined his palms in salutation and paid his respects.

अग्निहोत्र समाप्त कर चुके उन महाभाग (ऋषि) को देखकर, लक्ष्मण और सीता सहित श्रीराम ने हाथ जोड़कर (कृतांजलि) उन्हें प्रणाम किया।
English Commentary
The timing of the interaction is crucial. The sage had just completed the Agnihotra ritual (Huta agni hotram), meaning the sacred fire was still kindled and the spiritual atmosphere was charged. Rama waits for the ritual to conclude before interrupting. The gesture of Kṛta anjaliḥ (folded palms) is the universal sign of surrender and respect in Indian culture. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita bow together, presenting themselves as a united unit seeking blessings. The term Mahābhāgam (great-souled/illustrious) acknowledges the sage's exalted status derived from his successful rituals and penance.

'हुत अग्नि होत्रम्' का अर्थ है कि ऋषि ने अभी-अभी अपना दैनिक अग्नि-पूजन समाप्त किया है। यह मिलने का सबसे उपयुक्त समय है। राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता ने 'कृतांजलि' (हाथ जोड़कर) होकर उन्हें 'अभ्यवादयत्' (अभिवादन किया)। यह सामूहिक प्रणाम दर्शाता है कि तीनों एक ही भाव और उद्देश्य से ऋषि की शरण में आए हैं। 'महाभागम्' (महान भाग्य वाले/महान हिस्से वाले) शब्द ऋषि के लिए प्रयुक्त है, जो उनके पुण्य और तप के संचय को दर्शाता है। भारतीय संस्कृति में बड़ों के 'निवृत्त' (कार्य से मुक्त) होने पर ही उनसे बात करने का नियम है, जिसका पालन राम ने यहाँ किया।
