Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पित्रा नियुक्ता भगवन् प्रवेष्यामः तपो वनम् ।
धर्मम् एव आचरिष्यामः तत्र मूल फल अशनाः ॥२-५४-१६॥
pitrā niyuktā bhagavan praveṣyāmaḥ tapo vanam । dharmam eva ācariṣyāmaḥ tatra mūla phala aśanāḥ ॥ ॥2-54-16॥
Translation
"O Venerable One, commanded by our father, we are entering the ascetic forest. There, subsisting on roots and fruits, we shall practice righteousness alone."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे भगवन्! पिता के द्वारा नियुक्त (आदिष्ट) होकर हम तपोवन में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं। वहाँ हम कंद-मूल और फल खाते हुए केवल धर्म का ही आचरण करेंगे।"
English Commentary
This is Rama's declaration of intent. He assures Sage Bharadwaja that they are not tourists or displaced royals seeking luxury, but ascetics by command (niyuktā). By stating they will eat only mūla phala (roots and fruits), Rama signals his adherence to the dietary restrictions of the Vanaprastha (forest-dweller) stage. The focus is on Dharma—righteous conduct. Rama is essentially asking for permission to enter the spiritual ecosystem of the forest, promising to abide by its laws and not disturb the sanctity of the penance groves.

यह श्लोक राम के वनवास के उद्देश्य ("Mission Statement") को स्पष्ट करता है। राम ऋषि को आश्वस्त करते हैं कि वे वन में एक क्षत्रिय राजा की तरह शिकार खेलने या राज्य विस्तार के लिए नहीं, बल्कि 'तपोवन' के नियमों का पालन करने आए हैं। 'मूल फल अशनाः' (जड़ें और फल खाने वाले) यह दर्शाता है कि वे ऋषियों की जीवनशैली अपनाएंगे। 'धर्मम् एव आचरिष्यामः' (केवल धर्म का ही आचरण करेंगे) कहकर राम यह प्रतिज्ञा करते हैं कि वे वन की पवित्रता को भंग नहीं करेंगे, बल्कि उसे बनाए रखेंगे। यह ऋषि के प्रति उनकी विनम्रता और अनुकूलता को दर्शाता है।
