Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आगमिष्यति वैदेहीम् माम् च अपि प्रेक्षको जनः ।
अनेन कारणेन अहम् इह वासम् न रोचये ॥२-५४-२५॥
āgamiṣyati vaidehīm mām ca api prekṣako janaḥ । anena kāraṇena aham iha vāsam na rocaye ॥ ॥2-54-25॥
Translation
"People will keep coming to see Vaidehi and me. For this reason, I do not approve of dwelling here."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"लोग वैदेही (सीता) और मुझे देखने के लिए (यहाँ) आते रहेंगे। इसी कारण से मैं यहाँ निवास करना पसंद नहीं करता।"
English Commentary
Rama expands on his reasoning. The constant arrival of Prekṣako janaḥ (onlookers/sightseers) to gaze at the fallen prince and his wife in bark clothes would be undignified and disruptive. Rama is particularly protective of Sita (Vaidehim); he does not want her to be a spectacle for the masses. By stating na rocaye (I do not like/choose), he firmly but respectfully closes the door on the option of staying at Prayag, prioritizing the sanctity of the ashram and the integrity of his vow over physical comfort.
हिंदी टीका
राम अपनी चिंता को और स्पष्ट करते हैं। केवल राम ही नहीं, बल्कि 'वैदेही' (सीता) भी आकर्षण का केंद्र होंगी। वनवासी वेश में सीता को देखना प्रजा के लिए कौतूहल और दुख का विषय होगा। 'प्रेक्षकः जनः' (दर्शक लोग/भीड़) आश्रम की शांति भंग करेंगे और ऋषि की तपस्या में विघ्न डालेंगे। 'न रोचये' (मुझे रुचिकर नहीं है/मैं पसंद नहीं करता) कहकर राम दृढ़तापूर्वक अपनी असहमति व्यक्त करते हैं। यह निर्णय यह भी दिखाता है कि राम अपनी और सीता की दयनीय स्थिति का तमाशा नहीं बनने देना चाहते।
