Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शर्वरीम् भवनन्न् अद्य सत्य शील तव आश्रमे ।
उषिताः स्म इह वसतिम् अनुजानातु नो भवान् ॥ ॥२-५४-३७॥
Śarvarīm bhavanann adya satya śīla tava āśrame । Uṣitāḥ sma iha vasatim anujānātu no bhavān ॥ ॥2-54-37॥
Translation
O One of truthful character! We have dwelt in your hermitage for this night. Now, please permit us to proceed to our (intended) residence.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सत्यशील (सत्यव्रती) भगवन! आज (बीती) रात हम आपके आश्रम में रहे। अब हम (आगे अपने) निवास (गंतव्य) के लिए जाना चाहते हैं, आप हमें अनुमति दें।
English Commentary
Rama addresses the sage as Satya-shila (established in truth), acknowledging the sage's integrity. The verse serves as a formal leave-taking. Rama acknowledges the hospitality received ('We have dwelt here') and explicitly asks for permission (anujanatu) to leave for his next destination. This request for permission is significant; in the Vedic tradition, a guest does not simply walk away but seeks the blessing and consent of the host to depart, ensuring the departure is as auspicious as the arrival. It also signals Rama’s resolve: the comfort of the ashram has not weakened his determination to reach the forest of Chitrakuta.

श्रीराम यहाँ ऋषि को 'सत्यशील' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो भरद्वाज मुनि की सत्यनिष्ठा को नमन है। 'उषिताः स्म' (हम यहाँ रहे) कहकर वे कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करते हैं कि उन्हें आश्रय मिला। अब वे 'वसतिम्' (अपने अगले निवास, चित्रकूट) की ओर जाने के लिए 'अनुजानातु' (अनुमति) मांग रहे हैं। यह श्लोक विनम्रता की पराकाष्ठा है। यद्यपि ऋषि ने उन्हें रहने का विकल्प दिया था, श्रीराम अपने लक्ष्य के प्रति अडिग हैं और विनम्रतापूर्वक प्रस्थान की आज्ञा मांगते हैं, यह सुनिश्चित करते हुए कि वे ऋषि का समय या संसाधन व्यर्थ न करें।
