कृतपुण्याः स्म सौमित्रे मुनिर्यन्नोऽनुकम्पते ।
इति तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ मन्त्रयित्वा मनस्विनौ ॥ ॥२-५५-१२॥
Kṛta-puṇyāḥ sma Saumitre munir yan no'nukampate । Iti tau puruṣa-vyāghrau mantrayitvā manasvinau ॥ ॥2-55-12॥
Translation
"O Sumitra's son, we are meritorious indeed that the sage shows such compassion towards us." Thus, those two tigers among men, wise and high-minded, conferred with each other.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे सौमित्र! हम लोग पुण्यवान हैं जो मुनि हम पर (इतनी) कृपा करते हैं।" इस प्रकार उन दोनों मनस्वी (बुद्धिमान) पुरुषव्याघ्रों ने आपस में विचार-विमर्श किया।
English Commentary
Rama interprets the sage’s detailed guidance as a sign of their own past merits (Krita-punyah), framing the help they receive as divine grace rather than entitlement. Addressing Lakshmana as Saumitre emphasizes his closeness. The term Mantrayitva (having counselled/conferred) indicates that they didn't just walk blindly; they discussed the sage's advice and planned their next moves. The epithets Purusha-vyaghrau (tigers among men) and Manasvinau (high-minded) highlight their physical prowess and mental fortitude combined.

श्रीराम ऋषि की कृपा को अपने 'पुण्य' का फल मानते हैं। यह उनकी विनम्रता है कि वे ऋषि के स्नेह को अपना अधिकार नहीं, बल्कि भाग्य मानते हैं। 'अनुकम्पते' शब्द ऋषि की दयालुता को दर्शाता है। 'मनस्विनौ' (मनस्वी/विचारशील) विशेषण बताता है कि दोनों भाई केवल भावुक नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे स्थिति का चिंतन करते हैं। उन्होंने 'मंत्रणा' (विचार-विमर्श) की कि अब आगे कैसे बढ़ना है। यह श्लोक कृतज्ञता और भावी योजना का संगम है।
