Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गङ्गायमुनयोः सन्धिमासाद्य मनुजर्षभौ ।
कालिन्दीमनुगच्छेताम् नदीम् पश्चान्मुखाश्रिताम् ॥ ॥२-५५-४॥
Gaṅgā-Yamunayoḥ sandhim āsādya manujarṣabhau । Kālindīm anugacchetām nadīm paścān-mukhāśrithām ॥ ॥2-55-4॥
Translation
O bulls among men! Having reached the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, you should follow the Kalindi (Yamuna) river, proceeding upstream (towards the west).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे नरश्रेष्ठों! गंगा और यमुना के संगम पर पहुंचकर, तुम 'पश्चान्मुखाश्रिता' (पश्चिम दिशा की ओर बहने वाली/विपरीत दिशा से आने वाली) कालिन्दी (यमुना) नदी के किनारे-किनारे चलना।
English Commentary
This provides the first crucial turn in their journey. They are to start at the Sandhi (confluence) and then follow the Kalindi (Yamuna). The term Paschan-mukhashritam is technically interesting. Since the Yamuna flows generally East/South-East to meet the Ganga, moving towards Chitrakuta requires going upstream or Westward. Thus, the instruction is to follow the river back towards its direction of flow (upstream), leading them away from the confluence towards the hills of Bundelkhand.

यह श्लोक दिशा-निर्देश का आधार है। प्रयाग (संगम) से चित्रकूट जाने के लिए यमुना के सहारे पश्चिम/दक्षिण-पश्चिम जाना होता है। 'कालिन्दी' यमुना का ही नाम है (कालिंद पर्वत से निकलने वाली)। 'पश्चान्मुखाश्रिता' का अर्थ यहाँ धारा के विपरीत (upstream) या पश्चिम दिशा की ओर जाना है। चूंकि नदियाँ पूर्व की ओर बहकर समुद्र में मिलती हैं, अतः उनके उद्गम की ओर (पश्चिम) जाने के लिए 'पश्चान्मुखा' शब्द का प्रयोग भौगोलिक रूप से सटीक है।
