अथ रात्र्याम् व्यतीतायाम् अवसुप्तम् अनन्तरम् ।
प्रबोधयाम् आस शनैः लक्ष्मणम् रघु नन्दनः ॥ ॥२-५६-१॥
Atha rātryām vyatītāyām avasuptam anantaram । Prabodhayām āsa śanaiḥ lakṣmaṇam raghu nandanaḥ ॥ ॥2-56-1॥
Translation
Then, after the night had passed, Raghunandana (Rama) gently woke Lakshmana, who was sleeping beside him.

तदनंतर रात्रि व्यतीत होने पर, रघुनंदन (राम) ने अपने समीप सोए हुए लक्ष्मण को धीरे से जगाया।
English Commentary
This verse inverts the typical hierarchy where the younger servant wakes the master. Rama waking Lakshmana demonstrates his profound affection and acknowledgement of Lakshmana’s fatigue from constant service. The use of śanaiḥ (gently/slowly) indicates Rama's considerate nature; he does not startle his brother but rouses him softly. It marks the beginning of a new day in exile, emphasizing discipline. The epithet Raghunandana reinforces Rama's role as the scion of the Raghu clan, adhering to the disciplined schedule of waking before or at sunrise (Brahma Muhurta) even in the forest.

आमतौर पर अनुज अपने अग्रज को जगाते हैं, किंतु यहाँ राम का लक्ष्मण को जगाना उनके वात्सल्य और नेतृत्व को दर्शाता है। लक्ष्मण, जो सदा सेवा में तत्पर रहते हैं, संभवतः पिछली रात्रि के परिश्रम और सुरक्षा के दायित्व के कारण गहरी नींद में थे। राम का उन्हें 'शनैः' (धीरे से) जगाना उनकी संवेदनशीलता का परिचायक है। 'रघुनंदन' विशेषण यहाँ राम की कुलीनता और कर्तव्य-परायणता को याद दिलाता है कि सूर्योदय के साथ ही उन्हें अपनी यात्रा और नित्यकर्म पुनः आरंभ करने हैं।
