Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मनयश्च महात्मानो वसन्त्य शिलोच्चये ।
अयम् वासो भवेत् तावद् अत्र सौम्य रमेमहि ॥ ॥२-५६-१५॥
Munayaśca mahātmāno vasanty atra śiloccaye । Ayam vāso bhavet tāvad atra saumya ramemahi ॥ ॥2-56-15॥
Translation
Great sages dwell on this mountain. Let this be our abode; O gentle one, let us find delight here.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इस पर्वत (शिलोच्चये) पर महात्मा मुनिगण भी निवास करते हैं। (अतः) यही हमारा निवास स्थान बने, हे सौम्य! हम यहीं आनंदपूर्वक रहेंगे।
English Commentary
The deciding factor for the settlement is the presence of Munayaśca mahātmāno (great sages). In the ancient Indian context, living near sages ensured spiritual guidance, protection (through the power of penance), and a civilized social structure within the forest. It transforms the exile from a mere survivalist challenge into a spiritual retreat. The definitive statement ayam vāso bhavet (let this be the dwelling) signals the end of their search and the beginning of establishing their Ashram.

स्थान चयन का अंतिम और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कारण है 'सत्संग' की उपलब्धता। केवल भोजन और जल पर्याप्त नहीं है; आध्यात्मिक उन्नति के लिए महापुरुषों का सानिध्य आवश्यक है। 'मुनयश्च महात्मानो वसन्ति'—यह तथ्य उस स्थान की सुरक्षा और पवित्रता दोनों की गारंटी है। जहाँ ऋषि रहते हैं, वहाँ हिंसक पशुओं का भय कम होता है और वातावरण सात्विक होता है। 'अयम् वासो भवेत्' (यही निवास हो)—यह राम का अंतिम निर्णय (Verdict) है।
