मृगम् हत्वाऽऽनय क्षिप्रम् लक्ष्मणेह शुभेक्षण ।
कर्तव्यः शास्त्रदृष्टो हि विधिर्धर्ममनुस्मर ॥ ॥२-५६-२३॥
Mṛgam hatvā''naya kṣipram lakṣmaṇeha śubhekṣana । Kartavyaḥ śāstradṛṣṭo hi vidhirdharmamanusmara ॥ ॥2-56-23॥
Translation
O Lakshmana of auspicious sight, kill a deer and bring it here quickly. The ritual prescribed by the scriptures must be performed; keep the Dharma in mind.

हे शुभ दृष्टि वाले लक्ष्मण! एक मृग का वध करके उसे यहाँ शीघ्र ले आओ। शास्त्रों में बताई गई विधि का पालन करना हमारा कर्तव्य है; तुम धर्म का स्मरण करो।
English Commentary
Rama addresses Lakshmana affectionately as Shubhekshana (one with auspicious eyes) before reiterating the command to hunt. The crux of this verse lies in the phrase Shastradrishto vidhih—the ritual method envisioned or prescribed by the scriptures. Rama emphasizes that the act of hunting the deer is not merely for sustenance but is a procedural requirement for the Vastu ceremony sanctioned by the Shastras. By commanding Lakshmana to "remember Dharma," Rama aligns the act of killing the deer with religious duty rather than personal desire. This distinction is vital in understanding the Vedic perspective on violence (himsa); violence committed as part of a prescribed sacrifice (yajna) was often viewed as a transformative act for the benefit of the cosmic order. Rama serves as the upholder of these traditions, ensuring that their forest exile does not lead to a lapse in essential religious observances mandated for a prince establishing a residence.
