ततौत्थाय ते सर्वे स्पृष्ट्वा नद्याः शिवम् जलम् ।
पन्थानम् ऋषिणा उद्दिष्टम् चित्र कूटस्य तम् ययुः ॥ ॥२-५६-४॥
Tatautthāya te sarve spṛṣṭvā nadyāḥ śivam jalam । Panthānam ṛṣiṇā uddiṣṭam citra kūṭasya tam yayuḥ ॥ ॥2-56-4॥
Translation
Then, having risen and touched the auspicious waters of the river, they all proceeded on the path to Chitrakoot as directed by the Rishi.

तदनंतर उन सभी ने उठकर नदी के कल्याणकारी (शीतल/पवित्र) जल का स्पर्श (आचमन/स्नान) किया और ऋषि (भारद्वाज) द्वारा बताए गए चित्रकूट के मार्ग पर प्रस्थान किया।
English Commentary
This verse captures the ritual purity maintained by the exiles. Spṛṣṭvā (touching) implies performing ablutions and sipping water (achamana), essential Hindu morning rites. The water is described as Shivam (auspicious/beneficial), acknowledging the river's sanctity. The reference to the path being Rishi-uddistam (indicated by the Sage) reinforces that their journey is guided by wisdom and authority, not random wandering. They are systematically following the route to Chitrakoot mapped out by Sage Bharadwaja in previous cantos.
