Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पश्य भल्लातकान् फुल्लान् नरैः अनुपसेवितान् ।
फल पत्रैः अवनतान् नूनम् शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥ ॥२-५६-७॥
Paśya bhallātakān phullān naraiḥ anupasevitān । Phala patraiḥ avanatān nūnam śakṣyāmi jīvitum ॥ ॥2-56-7॥
Translation
Behold these blossoming Bhallataka trees, untouched by men. They are bowed down with fruits and leaves. Surely, I shall be able to survive here.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इन फूले हुए भल्लातक (भिलावा) के वृक्षों को देखो, जिनका मनुष्यों द्वारा उपभोग नहीं किया गया है। ये फलों और पत्तों के भार से झुके हुए हैं। निश्चित ही, मैं (यहाँ) जीवित रहने (निर्वाह करने) में समर्थ होऊंगा।
English Commentary
After appreciating the beauty, Rama assesses the survival potential of the land. The Bhallataka (Semecarpus anacardium) trees are described as bending under the weight of their produce. The observation that they are anupasevitān (untouched/unharvested by humans) confirms they have entered deep wilderness, far from settlements. Rama’s conclusion, "Surely I shall be able to survive," reflects relief and reassurance to Sita that nature will provide for them. It shows Rama's knowledge of botany and forest resources, essential for their fourteen-year vow.

यह श्लोक राम की व्यावहारिकता (pragmatism) को दर्शाता है। सौंदर्य दर्शन के बाद अब वे जीवन-निर्वाह के साधनों की ओर देख रहे हैं। 'नरैः अनुपसेवितान्' का अर्थ है कि यह वन इतना दुर्गम है कि यहाँ सामान्य मनुष्य नहीं आते, अतः यहाँ के संसाधन प्रचुर और सुरक्षित हैं। 'शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्' (मैं जीवित रह सकूँगा) कथन राम के आत्मविश्वास को दर्शाता है कि वनवास में भोजन की कमी नहीं होगी। भल्लातक के फलों और बीजों का उपयोग औषधीय और खाद्य रूप में (सावधानीपूर्वक) किया जाता है, जिसे राम पहचानते हैं।
