स राजमार्गमध्येन सुमन्त्रः पिहिताननः ।
यत्र राजा दशरथस्तदेवोपययौ गृहम् ॥ ॥२-५७-१६॥
Sa rājamārgamadhyena sumantraḥ pihitānanaḥ । Yatra rājā daśarathastadevopayayau gṛham ॥ ॥2-57-16॥
Translation
Covering his face, Sumantra went along the middle of the royal highway toward the very house where King Dasharatha was.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह सुमन्त्र राजमार्ग के बीच से, अपना मुँह ढके हुए (पिहिताननः), उसी भवन की ओर गए जहाँ राजा दशरथ थे।
English Commentary
The body language of Sumantra speaks volumes. He travels pihitananah (with face covered/concealed). This gesture signifies deep shame, guilt, and an inability to face the accusatory or sorrowful gazes of the public. He moves through the rajamarga (royal highway) towards Dasharatha's palace. The specificity yatra raja... tadeva (where the king was... to that very place) highlights his singular destination. Despite his reluctance, duty compels him to deliver the final report to the King. The covered face creates an image of a man broken by his mission, hiding his tears and his failure from the world.

सुमन्त्र की लज्जा और ग्लानि इस श्लोक में प्रकट होती है। वे 'पिहिताननः' (मुँह ढके हुए) हैं। वे प्रजा से आँखें नहीं मिला पा रहे हैं क्योंकि वे राम को वापस लाने में असफल रहे हैं। 'राजमार्गमध्येन' (राजमार्ग के बीच से) चलते हुए उनका संकोच स्पष्ट है। वे सीधे 'तदेव गृहम्' (उसी घर) की ओर जाते हैं जहाँ दशरथ हैं। उन्हें पता है कि राजा उनकी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं, लेकिन खाली हाथ लौटना उनके लिए मृत्युतुल्य है। मुँह छिपाना एक स्वाभाविक मानवीय प्रतिक्रिया है जब कोई व्यक्ति अत्यंत अपराधबोध या दुःख में होता है और दुनिया का सामना नहीं करना चाहता।
