Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हर्म्यैर्विमानैः प्रासादैरवेक्ष्याथ समागतम् ।
हाहाकारकृता नार्यो रामदर्शनकर्शिताः ॥ ॥२-५७-१८॥
Harmyairvimānaiḥ prāsādairavekṣyātha samāgatam । Hāhākārakṛtā nāryo rāmadarśanakarśitāḥ ॥ ॥2-57-18॥
Translation
Then, seeing him returned (alone) from their mansions, multi-storied buildings, and palaces, the women, emaciated/distressed by the lack of sight of Rama, raised a cry of lamentation ("Ha! Ha!").
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब हवेलियों (हर्म्य), सात-मंजिले भवनों (विमान) और महलों (प्रासाद) से सुमन्त्र को (अकेले) आया हुआ देखकर, राम के दर्शन के लिए व्याकुल (कर्शित) नारियों ने हाहाकार मचा दिया।
English Commentary
The perspective shifts to the vertical dimension. Women watching from Harmyas (mansions), Vimanas (seven-storied structures/palatial towers), and Prasadas (palaces) spot Sumantra. The vocabulary for architecture indicates the opulence of Ayodhya, contrasting with the prevailing misery. The women are described as Rama-darshana-karshitah—literally "emaciated/worn out by (waiting for) the sight of Rama." Upon seeing Sumantra alone, they burst into Hahakara (cries of "Ha! Ha!" or general wailing). This auditory explosion from the upper stories serves as a tragic herald to the rest of the palace that hope is lost.

महल के भीतर की स्त्रियां (संभवतः रनिवास की परिचारिकाएं या अन्य राज-महिलाएं) ऊँचे भवनों ('हर्म्य', 'विमान', 'प्रासाद') से सुमन्त्र को देखती हैं। 'रामदर्शनकर्शिताः' का अर्थ है जो राम के दर्शन न होने के कारण कमजोर या दुखी हो गई हैं। सुमन्त्र को अकेला देख उन्होंने 'हाहाकार' (दुःखद चीत्कार) किया। यह हाहाकार सामूहिक रुदन है जो महल में गूंज उठता है। यह ध्वनि दशरथ तक पहुँचने वाली पहली सूचना है कि सुमन्त्र खाली हाथ लौटे हैं। ऊँचे भवनों का उल्लेख यह बताने के लिए है कि महल के हर कोने से उन पर नज़र रखी जा रही थी।
