ततः दशरथ स्त्रीणाम् प्रासादेभ्यः ततः ततः ।
राम शोक अभितप्तानाम् मन्दम् शुश्राव जल्पितम् ॥ ॥२-५७-२०॥
Tataḥ daśaratha strīṇām prāsādebhyaḥ tataḥ tataḥ |
Rāma śoka abhitaptānām mandam śuśrāva jalpitam ॥2-57-20॥
Translation
Thereafter, Sumantra heard the faint whisperings from the palaces of Dasharatha's wives, who were tormented by grief for Rama.

तत्पश्चात सुमन्त्र ने राम के शोक से संतप्त दशरथ की रानियों का महलों से आता हुआ मन्द-मन्द वार्तालाप (विलाप) सुना।
English Commentary
As Sumantra enters the royal precinct, the atmosphere is heavy with despair. The phrase 'mandam jalpitam' (faint talk/whispering) is particularly poignant. It suggests that the queens are so exhausted by their grief that their lamentations have turned into weak, incoherent murmurs rather than loud wailing. This auditory imagery, coupled with the descriptor 'rāma śoka abhitaptānām' (tormented by grief for Rama), paints a picture of an inner palace drained of vitality. For Sumantra, who is already burdened with the task of delivering tragic news, these faint sounds from the balconies serve as a haunting prelude to the devastation awaiting him in the King's chamber.

सुमन्त्र जब राजभवन में प्रवेश कर रहे थे, तो वातावरण अत्यंत विषादपूर्ण था। यहाँ 'मन्दम् जल्पितम्' का प्रयोग अत्यंत मार्मिक है। रानियों का स्वर इतना क्षीण हो चुका है कि उनका विलाप अब स्पष्ट क्रंदन के बजाय दबी हुई, धीमी फुसफुसाहट जैसा प्रतीत हो रहा है। यह 'राम शोक अभितप्तानाम्' विशेषण के साथ मिलकर उस गहन पीड़ा को दर्शाता है जिसने अंतःपुर की रानियों की जीवन शक्ति को लगभग हर लिया है। सुमन्त्र, जो स्वयं भारी मन से लौटे हैं, के लिए यह ध्वनि उस दुखद सत्य का पूर्वघोष है जो उन्हें राजा को सुनाना है। महलों के झरोखों से आती ये ध्वनियाँ अयोध्या की शून्यता को प्रतिध्वनित करती हैं।
