स तूष्णीम् एव तत् श्रुत्वा राजा विभ्रान्त चेतनः ।
मूर्छितः न्यपतत् भूमौ राम शोक अभिपीडितः ॥ ॥२-५७-२६॥
Sa tūṣṇīm eva tat śrutvā rājā vibhrānta cetanaḥ |
Mūrcitaḥ nyapatat bhūmau rāma śoka abhipīḍitaḥ ॥2-57-26॥
Translation
Hearing that silently, the King, his mind confused and tormented by grief for Rama, fainted and fell to the ground.

वह (संदेश) सुनकर राजा चुप ही रहे और व्याकुल चित्त होकर राम के शोक से पीड़ित हो मूर्छित होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
The King's reaction is terrifyingly silent. 'Sa tūṣṇīm eva' (He remained silent) implies that the finality of the message severed his connection to speech. There were no more orders to give, no negotiations to make. His mind became 'vibhrānta' (confused/bewildered), unable to process a reality without Rama. The physical collapse ('nyapatat bhūmau') signifies the total defeat of the King's spirit. Tormented by 'rāma śoka' (grief for Rama), the mighty Dasharatha is reduced to a fainting, broken man on the floor, illustrating the supreme power of emotional attachment over physical might.

राम का संदेश सुनकर राजा की प्रतिक्रिया वाणी से नहीं, अपितु देह की विफलता से व्यक्त हुई। 'स तूष्णीम् एव' (वह चुप ही रहे)—यह सन्नाटा चीत्कार से भी अधिक भारी है। राजा के पास कहने के लिए कुछ शेष नहीं था क्योंकि आशा की अंतिम किरण (राम की वापसी) बुझ चुकी थी। 'विभ्रान्त चेतनः' दर्शाता है कि उनका मानसिक संतुलन बिगड़ गया, और शोक की तीव्रता ('अभिपीडितः') को उनका शरीर सहन न कर सका। पृथ्वी पर गिरना ('न्यपतत् भूमौ') उस महान सम्राट के पतन का प्रतीक है जो कभी देवताओं की सहायता करता था, पर आज अपने पुत्र के वियोग में असहाय है।
