सुमित्रया तु सहिता कौसल्या पतितम् पतिम् ।
उत्थापयाम् आस तदा वचनम् च इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-५७-२८॥
Sumitrayā tu sahitā kausalyā patitam patim |
Utthāpayām āsa tadā vacanam ca idam abravīt ॥2-57-28॥
Translation
Then Kausalya, together with Sumitra, raised her fallen husband and spoke these words.

तब सुमित्रा के साथ मिलकर कौशल्या ने गिरे हुए पति को उठाया और यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Even amidst general hysteria, the senior queens, Kausalya and Sumitra, prioritize their duty to the King. They physically assist him, lifting ('utthāpayām āsa') his fallen body. The pairing of Kausalya and Sumitra is significant; they share the grief of their sons' exile (Rama and Lakshmana), creating a bond of solidarity. Kausalya's action of lifting him is a prelude to her verbal attempt to rouse him from his stupor. It demonstrates that despite her own devastation, she retains the presence of mind to attend to her husband, setting the stage for her poignant address.

इस आपदा की घड़ी में भी कौशल्या और सुमित्रा अपने कर्तव्य का पालन करती हैं। यद्यपि कौशल्या स्वयं शोक के सागर में डूबी हैं, फिर भी वे 'पटरानी' होने का धर्म निभाती हैं। सुमित्रा, जो सदैव सहायक और विवेकी रही हैं, यहाँ भी कौशल्या का साथ देती हैं। दोनों मिलकर राजा को उठाती हैं। यहाँ कौशल्या का चरित्र उभरता है—वे केवल रोने वाली अबला नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे राजा को सचेत करने और वास्तविकता का सामना कराने का साहस भी रखती हैं। उनके अगला कथन (अगले श्लोकों में) इसी साहस और पीड़ा का मिश्रण होगा।
