Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किम् उवाच वचो रामः किम् उवाच च लक्ष्मणः ।
सुमन्त्र वनम् आसाद्य किम् उवाच च मैथिली ॥ ॥२-५८-११॥
Kim uvāca vaco rāmaḥ kim uvāca ca lakṣmaṇaḥ । Sumantra vanam āsādya kim uvāca ca maithilī ॥ ॥2-58-11॥
Translation
"O Sumantra, having reached the forest, what words did Rama speak? What did Lakshmana say? And what did Maithili (Sita) say?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे सुमन्त्र! वन में पहुँचकर राम ने क्या कहा? लक्ष्मण ने क्या कहा? और मैथिली (सीता) ने क्या कहा?"
English Commentary
This verse reveals the King's desperate need for a connection. He asks for the final verbal testament of the exiled trio. The repetition of kim uvāca (what did he/she say) underscores his anxiety. He specifically asks about them individually, acknowledging that each might have reacted differently to the trauma—Rama with stoicism, Lakshmana with anger, and Sita with sorrow. By asking what they said upon reaching the forest (vanam āsādya), Dasharatha is probing for their immediate reaction to their new, harsh reality, hoping perhaps for a message of blame that would justify his own guilt.

यह श्लोक राजा की व्यग्रता को दर्शाता है। वे एक ही सांस में तीनों के अंतिम वचन जानना चाहते हैं। नामों का क्रम—राम, लक्ष्मण, मैथिली—राजा के स्नेह और चिंता के पदानुक्रम (hierarchy) को भी दिखाता है। 'वनम् आसाद्य' (वन में पहुँचकर) पद महत्वपूर्ण है; राजा जानना चाहते हैं कि वन की कठोरता को स्पर्श करते ही उनकी प्रतिक्रिया क्या थी। क्या वे रोए? क्या उन्होंने शिकायत की? एक पिता अपने बच्चों के अंतिम मनोभावों को अपने हृदय में संजोना चाहता है ताकि वह उनके वियोग में उन शब्दों के सहारे जी सके।
