Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अब्रवीन् माम् महा राज धर्मम् एव अनुपालयन् ।
अन्जलिम् राघवः कृत्वा शिरसा अभिप्रणम्य च ॥ ॥२-५८-१४॥
Abravīn mām mahā rāja dharmam eva anupālayan । Anjalim rāghavaḥ kṛtvā śirasā abhipraṇamya ca ॥ ॥2-58-14॥
Translation
(Sumantra said:) "O Great King, upholding Dharma alone, Raghava joined his palms in salutation, bowed his head, and spoke to me..."

(सुमन्त्र बोले:) "हे महाराज! धर्म का ही पालन करते हुए राघव ने हाथ जोड़कर और सिर झुकाकर मुझे प्रणाम करते हुए यह कहा..."
English Commentary
Sumantra begins his report by characterizing Rama's demeanor. Even in the face of exile, Rama is described as dharmam eva anupālayan (following Dharma exclusively). There is no trace of rebellion. His physical gestures—anjalim kṛtvā (joined palms) and bowing—indicate his unwavering respect for authority and tradition. By explicitly mentioning these gestures, Sumantra assures Dasharatha that his son did not leave with bitterness in his heart, but with the grace characteristic of a true Aryan prince.

सुमन्त्र सबसे पहले राम की मानसिक स्थिति का वर्णन करते हैं। वन जाते समय भी राम 'धर्मम् एव अनुपालयन्' (केवल धर्म का ही पालन कर रहे थे)। न क्रोध, न क्षोभ, न शिकायत। 'अन्जलिम् कृत्वा' (हाथ जोड़कर) और 'शिरसा अभिप्रणम्य' (सिर झुकाकर)—ये क्रियाएं बताती हैं कि राम ने जाने से पहले अपने पिता के प्रतिनिधि (सुमन्त्र) के प्रति पूर्ण सम्मान व्यक्त किया। यह श्लोक राम के चरित्र की महानता को स्थापित करता है; घोर अन्याय के क्षण में भी उनकी मर्यादा और विनय खंडित नहीं हुई।
