Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इति एवम् माम् महाराज बृवन्न् एव महा यशाः ।
रामः राजीव ताम्र अक्षो भृशम् अश्रूणि अवर्तयत् ॥२-५८-२५॥
Iti evam mām mahārāja bṛvann eva mahā yaśāḥ । Rāmaḥ rājīva tāmra akṣo bhṛśam aśrūṇi avartayat ॥2-58-25॥
Translation
O Great King! While speaking thus to me, the highly illustrious Rama, whose eyes resemble red lotuses, shed tears profusely.

हे महाराज! मुझसे ऐसा कहते हुए, महायशस्वी और कमल के समान ताम्रवर्णी नेत्रों वाले राम ने अत्यंत आंसू बहाए।
English Commentary
Sumantra paints a vivid picture of Rama's emotional state for King Dasharatha. The epithet rājīva tāmra akṣo (red lotus-eyed) suggests both Rama's natural beauty and the redness caused by intense weeping. It serves as a powerful contrast: the mahā yaśāḥ (greatly illustrious) hero who is usually composed is now weeping openly. This verse serves as a transition in Sumantra's report—moving from Rama's compassionate instructions to the sheer tragedy of the separation, preparing Dasharatha for the harsher words of Lakshmana that follow.

सुमंत यहाँ महाराज दशरथ को राम की अंतिम अवस्था का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'राजीव ताम्र अक्षो' (लाल कमल के समान नेत्र) राम के सौंदर्य और उनके विलाप के कारण आँखों की लालिमा, दोनों को इंगित करता है। राम, जो 'महा यशाः' (महान यशस्वी) और धैर्यवान हैं, उनका इस प्रकार रोना स्थिति की गंभीरता और दुख की गहनता को बताता है। सुमंत का उद्देश्य राजा दशरथ को यह बताना है कि वनवास स्वीकार करते हुए राम ने धर्म तो नहीं छोड़ा, किन्तु उनका हृदय विदीर्ण हो रहा था। यह वर्णन श्रोता (दशरथ) के दुख को और अधिक बढ़ा देता है।
