Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राज्ञा तु खलु कैकेय्या लघु त्वाश्रित्य शासनम् ।
कृतम् कार्यमकार्यम् वा वयम् येनाभिपीडिताः ॥२-५८-२७॥
Rājñā tu khalu kaikeyyā laghu tvāśritya śāsanam । Kṛtam kāryamakāryam vā vayam yenābhipīḍitāḥ ॥2-58-27॥
Translation
'The King, indeed, acting under the influence of Kaikeyi, has seemingly accepted a trivial/lowly command. Whether this deed is proper or improper, we are tormented by it.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'राजा ने निश्चय ही कैकेयी के वश में होकर यह अनुचित शासन (आदेश) स्वीकार कर लिया है। उन्होंने यह कार्य (राम का वनवास) उचित किया हो या अनुचित, पर इसके द्वारा हम सब अत्यंत पीड़ित हुए हैं।'
English Commentary
Lakshmana criticizes Dasharatha's agency, suggesting the King hid behind Kaikeyi's influence to execute a laghu (light, trivial, or mean) command. He dismisses the moral debate of whether keeping the vow was technically "right" (kāryam) or "wrong" (akāryam). Instead, he focuses on the tangible suffering it has caused. To Lakshmana, an action that results in the torment of the virtuous cannot be justified by abstract principles of truth-keeping. He views Dasharatha's submission to Kaikeyi as a weakness, not a virtue.

लक्ष्मण का आरोप स्पष्ट है—राजा ने अपनी स्वतंत्र बुद्धि खो दी है और वे कैकेयी के अधीन हैं। 'लघु त्वाश्रित्य' का अर्थ है कि राजा ने अपनी गरिमा के विपरीत एक तुच्छ या नीच मार्ग का आश्रय लिया है। लक्ष्मण यहाँ यह तर्क नहीं कर रहे कि वरदान देना सही था या गलत, वे परिणाम पर ध्यान केंद्रित कर रहे हैं: 'वयम् येनाभिपीडिताः' (जिससे हम सब पीड़ित हैं)। लक्ष्मण के अनुसार, राजा का प्राथमिक कर्तव्य प्रजा और परिवार का रक्षण है, और जिस कार्य से निर्दोषों को इतनी पीड़ा मिले, वह राजधर्म के विरुद्ध ही है, चाहे उसका कारण कुछ भी हो।
