वृद्धम् परम सम्तप्तम् नव ग्रहम् इव द्विपम् ।
विनिःश्वसन्तम् ध्यायन्तम् अस्वस्थम् इव कुन्जरम् ॥ ॥२-५८-३॥
Vṛddham parama samtaptaṃ nava graham iva dvipam । Viniḥśvasantam dhyāyantam asvastham iva kunjaram ॥ ॥2-58-3॥
Translation
(The King appeared) like an old elephant deeply distressed, sighing heavily and brooding like a newly captured wild elephant that is unwell.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(राजा दिखाई पड़ रहे थे) जैसे कोई बूढ़ा हाथी, जो अत्यंत संतप्त हो, या जैसे कोई नया पकड़ा गया जंगली हाथी जो लंबी आहें भर रहा हो, विचारमग्न हो और अस्वस्थ हो।
English Commentary
This verse employs a powerful simile (upamā), comparing King Dasharatha to a gaja (elephant). The juxtaposition of vṛddham (old) with nava graham (newly captured) is psychologically significant. While physically old, his grief is fresh and raw, making him react with the restlessness of a newly captured wild elephant. The act of viniḥśvasantam (sighing heavily) and dhyāyantam (brooding/contemplating) reflects the King's internal turmoil. An elephant represents majesty and strength; seeing such a creature asvastham (unwell/diseased by grief) underscores the tragic fall of the Emperor. He is trapped by the cage of his own truth.

वाल्मीकि रामायण में उपमाओं का प्रयोग अद्भुत है। यहाँ दशरथ की तुलना 'द्विपम्' (हाथी) से की गई है। 'वृद्धम्' उनकी अवस्था बताता है, किन्तु 'नवा ग्रहम् इव' (नये पकड़े गए के समान) उनकी मानसिक छटपटाहट को दर्शाता है। जैसे वन से पकड़कर लाया गया हाथी बंधन में छटपटाता है और लंबी साँसें (विनिःश्वसन्तम्) लेता है, वैसे ही दशरथ अपने वचन और सत्यपाश में बंधे हुए छटपटा रहे हैं। हाथी एक विशाल और शक्तिशाली जीव है, उसका 'अस्वस्थ' होना एक बड़े पतन का सूचक है। यह उपमा दशरथ की राजसी गरिमा और वर्तमान लाचारी का मर्मस्पर्शी चित्रण है।
