तथैव रामः अश्रु मुखः कृत अन्जलिः ।
स्थितः अभवल् लक्ष्मण बाहु पालितः स्थितः ।
तथैव सीता रुदती तपस्विनी ।
निरीक्षते राज रथम् तथैव माम् ॥२-५८-३७॥
Tathaiva rāmaḥ aśru mukhaḥ kṛta anjaliḥ । Sthitaḥ abhaval lakṣmaṇa bāhu pālitaḥ sthitaḥ । Tathaiva sītā rudatī tapasvinī । Nirīkṣate rāja ratham tathaiva mām ॥2-58-37॥
Translation
'In that very state stood Rama with a tearful face and folded hands; Lakshmana stood guarding him by the arm. And in that same state, the weeping ascetic Sita kept gazing at the royal chariot and at me.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'उसी प्रकार अश्रुपूरित मुख वाले और हाथ जोड़े हुए राम खड़े थे; लक्ष्मण उनकी भुजाओं का सहारा लेकर (रक्षण करते हुए) खड़े थे। और उसी प्रकार वह तपस्विनी सीता रोती हुई उस राजरथ और मुझे एकटक देख रही थीं।'
English Commentary
Sumantra captures the final freezing frame of the trio. Rama remains respectful (kṛta anjaliḥ) to the symbol of the King (the chariot) despite his tears. Lakshmana is positioned as the protector (bāhu pālitaḥ), physically demonstrating his vow to shield Rama. Sita is the passive observer of her own tragedy, fixated on the departing vehicle. This visual reinforces their distinct roles: Rama as the stoic upholder of Dharma, Lakshmana as the fierce protector, and Sita as the suffering soul leaving home.

यह सर्ग 58 का अंतिम दृश्य (Tableau) है। यहाँ तीनों की स्थिति स्पष्ट है: राम 'कृत अन्जलिः' हैं—अर्थात पिता और राजा के दूत (सुमंत) के प्रति अंतिम क्षण तक विनम्र। लक्ष्मण 'बाहु पालितः' हैं—अर्थात उन्होंने राम को अपनी भुजाओं के घेरे में या रक्षण मुद्रा में ले रखा है (या राम के बाहु का सहारा लिए हैं), जो उनकी सेवा-वृत्ति दिखाता है। और सीता की दृष्टि केवल रथ पर टिकी है। यह चित्र सुमंत के हृदय में और अब दशरथ के हृदय में अंकित हो जाता है।
