देव राजरथम् दृष्ट्वा विना राममिहागतम् ।
दुःखादश्रुमुखः सर्वो राजमार्गगतो जनः ॥२-५९-११॥
deva rājaratham dṛṣṭvā vinā rāmamihāgatam |
duḥkhādaśrumukhaḥ sarvo rājamārgagato janaḥ ॥2-59-11॥
Translation
O King! Seeing the royal chariot return here without Rama, all the people present on the royal highway have faces covered in tears due to grief.

हे महाराज! राम के बिना राजरथ को यहाँ आया देखकर, राजमार्ग पर स्थित सभी लोग दुःख से अश्रुपूरित मुख वाले हो गए हैं।
English Commentary
The imagery focuses on the rājaratham (royal chariot). This vehicle, which was meant to carry the future King to his coronation, has returned empty. Sumantra emphasizes the visibility of this tragedy by mentioning the rājamārga (royal highway/main street). It is a public witnessing of the loss. The use of the word deva (Your Majesty) reminds Dasharatha of his responsibility for this scene. The universality of the grief is highlighted—every single person (sarvo janaḥ) on the road is weeping. It signifies that the bond between Rama and the subjects was not merely political but deeply emotional and personal.

सुमंत्र यहाँ राजा को 'देव' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो दशरथ के लिए सम्मानसूचक है। इस श्लोक में 'राजमार्ग' (शाही सड़क) का उल्लेख महत्वपूर्ण है। यह वह स्थान है जहाँ कभी राम के राज्याभिषेक के उत्सव की तैयारी हो रही थी, और जहाँ भीड़ उमड़ रही थी। आज वही भीड़ है, किन्तु दृश्य विपरीत है। खाली 'राजरथ' अब राजसी सत्ता का प्रतीक नहीं, बल्कि एक त्रासदी का वाहक बन गया है। 'सर्वो जनः' (सभी लोग) शब्द का प्रयोग यह बताता है कि यह दुःख व्यक्तिगत नहीं, बल्कि सार्वभौमिक है; इसमें अमीर, गरीब, बच्चे या वृद्ध का भेद नहीं है। यह एक सामूहिक राष्ट्रीय शोक का चित्रण है।
