आयतैः विमलैः नेत्रैः अश्रु वेग परिप्लुतैः ।
अन्योन्यम् अभिवीक्षन्ते व्यक्तम् आर्ततराः स्त्रियः ॥२-५९-१३॥
āyataiḥ vimalair netraiḥ aśru vega pariplutaiḥ |
anyonyam abhivīkṣante vyaktam ārtatarāḥ striyaḥ ॥2-59-13॥
Translation
With wide, spotless eyes flooded with a rush of tears, the women look at one another, their intense distress clearly visible.

अपने विशाल और निर्मल नेत्रों में आंसुओं के वेग को भरे हुए, वे स्त्रियाँ एक-दूसरे को देख रही हैं; वे स्पष्ट रूप से अत्यंत पीड़ित हैं।
English Commentary
Sumantra describes a silent communion of grief. The women correspond with each other solely through glances (abhivīkṣante), as the shock has rendered them speechless. Valmiki’s poetic genius is evident in contrasting the beauty of their "wide, spotless eyes" (āyataiḥ vimalair netraiḥ) with the tragedy of them being "flooded with tears" (aśru vega pariplutaiḥ). It emphasizes innocence and undeserved suffering. The phrase ārtatarāḥ (more distressed/extremely afflicted) indicates that their pain has surpassed normal limits. This visual of silent, weeping women serves to pierce King Dasharatha's heart with the reality of his decision's impact on the innocent.

यहाँ शोक की मूक भाषा का वर्णन है। स्त्रियाँ इतनी व्यथित हैं कि वे बोल भी नहीं पा रही हैं, केवल एक-दूसरे को देख रही हैं। 'आयतैः विमलैः नेत्रैः' (विशाल और निर्मल नेत्र) का प्रयोग कर महर्षि वाल्मीकि शोक की सुंदरता और पवित्रता को रेखांकित करते हैं। ये आंसू किसी साधारण हानि के लिए नहीं, बल्कि धर्म और सत्य के प्रतीक राम के लिए हैं। 'अश्रु वेग' (आंसुओं का प्रवाह) उनकी पीड़ा की तीव्रता को दर्शाता है। यह एक सामूहिक मूक संवाद है जहाँ शब्द अनावश्यक हैं क्योंकि सबकी पीड़ा एक समान है। सुमंत्र राजा को बता रहे हैं कि अन्तःपुर और नगर की स्त्रियाँ किस कदर टूट चुकी हैं।
