सूतस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा वाचा परम दीनया ।
बाष्प उपहतया राजा तम् सूतम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-५९-१७॥
sūtasya vacanam śrutvā vācā parama dīnayā |
bāṣpa upahatayā rājā tam sūtam idam abravīt ॥2-59-17॥
Translation
Hearing the words of the charioteer, the King, with a voice choked by tears and sounding extremely piteous, spoke thus to him.

सारथि (सुमंत्र) के वचन सुनकर, आंसुओं से रुंधे हुए गले और अत्यंत दीन वाणी में राजा ने उस सारथि से यह कहा।
English Commentary
The narrative focus shifts from the reporter (Sumantra) to the listener (Dasharatha). The impact of Sumantra’s desolate description is immediate. The King is described as having a voice that is parama dīnayā (exceedingly miserable) and bāṣpa upahatayā (obstructed by tears/vapors of grief). This marks the complete disintegration of Dasharatha's royal composure. He is no longer the commanding monarch but a broken father and a guilt-ridden ruler. The verse sets the stage for the confession that follows, highlighting the vulnerability of the King.

यहाँ प्रसंग बदलता है। अब तक सुमंत्र बोल रहे थे, अब वाल्मीकि जी राजा दशरथ की प्रतिक्रिया का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'बाष्प उपहतया' (भाप/आंसुओं से रुकी हुई) वाणी राजा की असमर्थता और टूटते हुए धैर्य को दर्शाती है। दशरथ 'परम दीनया' (अत्यंत दीन) अवस्था में हैं—जो कभी चक्रवर्ती सम्राट थे, आज वे अपने ही निर्णय के बोझ तले दबकर याचक जैसे दिख रहे हैं। सुमंत्र का सत्य कथन सुनकर राजा का रहा-सहा संयम भी टूट गया है। यह श्लोक राजा के पश्चाताप के आरंभ की भूमिका है, जहाँ वे अपनी गलती स्वीकार करने जा रहे हैं।
