कैकेय्या विनियुक्तेन पाप अभिजन भावया ।
मया न मन्त्र कुशलैः वृद्धैः सह समर्थितम् ॥२-५९-१८॥
kaikeyyā viniyuktena pāpa abhijana bhāvayā |
mayā na mantra kuśalaiḥ vṛddhaiḥ saha samarthitam ॥2-59-18॥
Translation
Urged by Kaikeyi, who harbors sinful intentions (or is born of a sinful nature), I did not consult with the elders skilled in counsel.

English Commentary
Dasharatha explicitly admits to a failure of statecraft. In Vedic monarchy, a King is not an autocrat; he must act in concert with his Samiti or council of ministers (mantra kuśalaiḥ). Dasharatha confesses that he bypassed this crucial check and balance system due to being manipulated by Kaikeyi. He refers to her as pāpa abhijana bhāvayā—referencing either her sinful intent or her lineage (her mother was known for a cruel disposition), suggesting nature/nurture played a role in her cruelty. This is a moment of deep regret where the King realizes he sacrificed political wisdom for personal obligation and emotional manipulation.
