Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गुहा इव सार्धम् तत्र एव स्थितः अस्मि दिवसान् बहून् ।
आशया यदि माम् रामः पुनः शब्दापयेद् इति ॥२-५९-३॥
Guhā iva sārdham tatra eva sthitaḥ asmi divasān bahūn । Āśayā yadi mām rāmaḥ punaḥ śabdāpayed iti ॥2-59-3॥
Translation
'I remained there for many days with Guha, in the hope that Rama might call for me again.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'मैं इस आशा में कि कदाचित राम मुझे पुनः बुला लें, गुह (निषादराज) के साथ वहीं कई दिनों तक ठहरा रहा।'
English Commentary
Sumantra reveals he did not return immediately. He lingered at the border with Guha for "many days," clinging to a desperate hope (āśayā) that Rama might reconsider or require his services again (punaḥ śabdāpayed). This delay highlights the difficulty of accepting the finality of the exile. It also explains the lapse in time between Rama's departure and Sumantra's return to Ayodhya, adding suspense to the narrative back in the capital.

सुमंत तुरंत नहीं लौटे। यह श्लोक उनकी अटूट आशा को दर्शाता है। उन्हें लगा कि शायद वन के कष्ट देखकर राम का मन बदल जाए, या सीता घबरा जाएं और राम उन्हें वापस बुला लें। 'दिवसान् बहून्' (कई दिनों तक) रुकना यह बताता है कि सेवक अपने स्वामी को विपत्ति में छोड़कर जाने में कितना असमर्थ महसूस कर रहा था। गुह के साथ रुकना यह भी दिखाता है कि राम के सभी प्रियजन एक ही दुख में सहभागी थे।
