जलजानि च पुष्पाणि माल्यानि स्थलजानि च ।
न अद्य भान्ति अल्प गन्धीनि फलानि च यथा पुरम् ॥२-५९-८॥
Jalajāni ca puṣpāni mālyāni sthalajāni ca । Na adya bhānti alpa gandhīni phalāni ca yathā puram ॥2-59-8॥
Translation
'Flowers born of water and those born of land no longer shine as before, nor are they fit for garlands. The fruits, too, have very little fragrance compared to the past.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'जल में उत्पन्न होने वाले और भूमि पर उत्पन्न होने वाले फूल अब पहले की तरह सुशोभित नहीं हो रहे हैं। वे माला बनाने योग्य नहीं रहे और फलों की सुगंध भी अब (पहले की तुलना में) बहुत कम हो गई है।'
English Commentary
The sensory world of Ayodhya has been dulled. Both aquatic and terrestrial flowers have lost their visual appeal (na bhānti) and utility (not fit for garlands). The fruits have lost their essence (alpa gandhīni - of little fragrance). Sumantra asserts that the very quality of objects has diminished. This signifies a metaphysical drain on the kingdom; the departure of the Purushottama (Best of Men) has sucked the vibrancy and sweetness out of material existence.

यह श्लोक संवेदी अनुभवों (Sensory experience) में आई गिरावट को बताता है। फूलों की 'कांति' (Visual beauty) और फलों की 'गंध' (Fragrance/Taste) दोनों क्षीण हो गए हैं। 'यथा पुरम्' (जैसे पहले थे) से तुलना करके सुमंत बताते हैं कि राम के वन जाते ही युग परिवर्तन जैसा हो गया है—सतयुग जैसी अयोध्या अब श्रीहीन हो गई है। यह केवल कवित्व नहीं, बल्कि यह भाव है कि राम ही इन वस्तुओं के 'सार' (Essence) थे; उनके बिना वस्तुओं का गुण-धर्म भी नष्ट हो गया है।
