Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अत्रोद्यानानि शून्यानि प्रलीनविहगानि च ।
न चाभिरामानारामान् पश्यामि मनुजर्षभ ॥२-५९-९॥
atrodyānāni śūnyāni pralīnavihagāni ca |
na cābhirāmānārāmān paśyāmi manujarṣabha ॥2-59-9॥
Translation
O Bull among men (King Dasharatha), the gardens here are desolate, and the birds have gone into hiding. I no longer find the pleasure groves, which were once delightful, to be pleasing to the eye.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे नृपश्रेष्ठ! यहाँ (अयोध्या में) उद्यान सूने पड़े हैं और पक्षी कहीं छिप गए हैं (कोलाहल नहीं कर रहे)। जो क्रीड़ा-वन (आराम) पहले मन को भाते थे, वे अब रमणीय नहीं दिख रहे हैं।
English Commentary
This verse captures the pathetic fallacy, where nature mirrors the emotional state of the narrative. Sumantra, returning without Rama, describes Ayodhya not as a bustling capital, but as a ghost town. The phrase pralīnavihagāni (birds have hidden away/merged into silence) suggests that the grief is so heavy that it has suppressed the natural instinct of birds to sing. Gardens (udyānāni) and pleasure groves (ārāmān), usually sources of solace and joy, have lost their essence. Sumantra addresses Dasharatha as manujarṣabha (Bull among men), a formal honorific that stands in stark contrast to the King's crumbling emotional state, highlighting the tragedy that has befallen the once-glorious monarch.

यह श्लोक सुमंत्र द्वारा अयोध्या लौटने पर राजा दशरथ को दी गई पहली विदारक रिपोर्ट का हिस्सा है। सुमंत्र, जो राम को वन की सीमा पर छोड़कर आए हैं, अयोध्या की "शून्यता" का वर्णन करते हैं। यहाँ 'प्रलीनविहगानि' (छिपे हुए पक्षी) का प्रयोग अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है; यह दर्शाता है कि केवल मनुष्य ही नहीं, बल्कि प्रकृति और पशु-पक्षी भी राम के वियोग में मौन और उदास हैं। एक संपन्न राज्य की पहचान उसके हरे-भरे और गुंजायमान उद्यानों से होती है, किन्तु राम के बिना अयोध्या की जीवंतता समाप्त हो चुकी है। सुमंत्र राजा को 'मनुजर्षभ' (मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो उस समय की विडंबना को गहरा करता है क्योंकि राजा इस समय अपनी सबसे दयनीय स्थिति में हैं।
