द्विजाति चरितः धर्मः शास्त्र दृष्टः सनातनः ।
यदि ते धर्म निरते त्वया पुत्रे विवासिते ॥२-६१-२३॥
Dvijāti caritaḥ dharmaḥ śāstra dṛṣṭaḥ sanātanaḥ |
Yadi te dharma nirate tvayā putre vivasite ॥2-61-23॥
Translation
If, while you claim to be devoted to Dharma, your son is banished by you, (is this) the eternal Dharma practiced by the twice-born and prescribed in the scriptures?
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि धर्म में तत्पर रहने वाले (कहे जाने वाले) आपके द्वारा पुत्र को निर्वासित करने पर भी, यह द्विजातियों (विद्वानों) द्वारा आचरित और शास्त्रों में देखा गया सनातन धर्म (सुरक्षित) है... (तो यह आश्चर्य की बात है/या यह कैसा धर्म है?)।
English Commentary
Kausalya questions the theological basis of Dasharatha's decision. She references Sanatana Dharma as practiced by the Dvijati (learned class) and found in Shastra (scripture). She juxtaposes this high moral code with Dasharatha's specific action: banishing his son while claiming to be Dharma-nirate (devoted to Dharma). The implication is that his adherence to 'truth' (the promise to Kaikeyi) violates the higher, eternal Dharma of protecting the innocent and the duties of a father/king.

यह श्लोक व्यंग्यात्मक है। कौसल्या दशरथ के उस 'धर्म' को चुनौती दे रही हैं जिसके नाम पर उन्होंने राम को वन भेजा (कैकेयी को दिया वचन)। वह पूछती हैं—क्या शास्त्रों में और विद्वानों के आचरण में ऐसा कोई 'सनातन धर्म' है जो पुत्र को बिना अपराध के घर से निकाल दे? 'यदि ते धर्म निरते' (यदि आप धर्म में लगे हैं)—यह एक कटाक्ष है। आशय यह है कि यह धर्म नहीं, बल्कि धर्म का आभास मात्र है, या धर्म के नाम पर किया गया अधर्म है।
