Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
महा इन्द्र ध्वज सम्काशः क्व नु शेते महा भुजः ।
भुजम् परिघ सम्काशम् उपधाय महा बलः ॥२-६१-७॥
Mahā indra dhvaja samkāśaḥ kva nu śete mahā bhujaḥ |
Bhujam parigha samkāśam upadhāya mahā balaḥ ॥2-61-7॥
Translation
Where indeed does that mighty-armed Rama, who is tall and majestic like the flagstaff of Indra, sleep now? Surely the incredibly strong one sleeps resting his head on his own arm, resembling an iron bar.

महेंद्रध्वज के समान विशाल और महाबली राम, जिनकी भुजाएं अर्गला (लोहे की छड़) के समान हैं, अपनी ही भुजा का तकिया बनाकर अब कहाँ सोते होंगे?
English Commentary
Kausalya visualizes Rama's sleeping conditions. The imagery is majestic yet tragic. Rama is compared to Mahendra Dhvaja (Indra's flagstaff), implying uprightness and glory. His arms are like Parigha (iron bludgeons/bars). Yet, this mighty warrior has no bed. The image of Rama using his own muscular arm as a pillow (Upadhaya) is iconic in the Ramayana—it symbolizes the warrior's austerity, but for the mother, it symbolizes the loss of comfort and the harshness of the earth he must now sleep upon.

यहाँ राम के शारीरिक सौंदर्य और शक्ति का वर्णन है, जो उनकी वर्तमान दुर्दशा को और अधिक कष्टदायक बनाता है। राम की तुलना 'महेन्द्रध्वज' से की गई है, जो उनकी भव्यता और ऊंचाई को दर्शाता है। 'परिघ' (किले का दरवाजा बंद करने वाली लोहे की छड़) जैसी भुजाओं का उपयोग अब तकिये के रूप में करना पड़ रहा है। जो भुजाएं शत्रुओं का नाश करने के लिए थीं, वे अब कठोर भूमि पर सिर को सहारा दे रही हैं। माँ की चिंता 'नींद' और 'आराम' को लेकर है।
