Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वज्र सारमयम् नूनम् हृदयम् मे न सम्शयः ।
अपश्यन्त्या न तम् यद् वै फलति इदम् सहस्रधा ॥२-६१-९॥
Vajra sāramayam nūnam hṛdayam me na samśayaḥ |
Apaśyantyā na tam yad vai phalati idam sahasradhā ॥2-61-9॥
Translation
There is no doubt that my heart is made of the essence of a thunderbolt (adamantine); for even though I do not see him, it does not burst into a thousand pieces.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि मेरा हृदय वज्र के सार (अत्यंत कठोर पदार्थ) से बना है, जो उस राम को न देख पाने पर भी हजारों टुकड़ों में नहीं फट रहा है।
English Commentary
Kausalya expresses a classic sentiment of grief: survivor's guilt. She wonders why her physical heart remains intact when her emotional world has been shattered. She concludes it must be made of Vajra (thunderbolt/diamond), the hardest material known, because it refuses to break (Phalati) into a thousand pieces despite the unbearable pain of separation. This verse highlights the resilience of the body even when the spirit wishes to perish.

भारतीय साहित्य में यह एक प्रचलित भाव है कि अत्यधिक शोक में हृदय का फट जाना स्वाभाविक है। यदि हृदय नहीं फटता, तो उसे पत्थर या वज्र का माना जाता है। कौसल्या स्वयं को कोस रही हैं कि वे अभी भी जीवित कैसे हैं। 'वज्र सारमयम्' (वज्र से बना हुआ) होना यहाँ शक्ति नहीं, बल्कि दुर्भाग्य का सूचक है। राम के बिना जीवन धारण करना उनके लिए मृत्यु से भी अधिक कष्टकारी है। यह आत्म-ग्लानि और चरम शोक की अभिव्यक्ति है।
